We need some help!
My sisters, our husbands and I planted 3,500 native trees on our property in April 2023 and now they are getting overrun with weeds. We just can’t keep on top of them ourselves so are looking for some help around the property to maintain and slowly improve it.
Our aim is to plant more native trees every year, slowly restoring this land to its former glory. We are actively involved in pest control and hope to see many native birds happily living here in the future.
The Property:
We welcome you to stay with us at our beautiful 10-acre costal beach property.
Located at 51 Omiru Road, Mahinepua Beach in Northland. About half an hour’s drive north from Waipapa/Kerikeri or 25 minutes from Kaeo.
The Area:
The driveway to our property is the start of the gorgeous Mahinepua Peninsular DOC walking track – this is such a nice walk to do!
We are not too far from Whangaroa Harbour which is a great area to explore and there is our favourite Saint Pauls Rock walk there too. Matauri Bay is close by which is a well-known surfing beach.
Kerikeri has so much to see and do – including Rainbow Falls, the Stone Store and Kerikeri Mission House.
Slightly further south is the popular tourist destinations of Paihia and Russell in the famous Bay of Islands. Further North there are so many beautiful (and often overlooked) beaches to explore too (Mangonui, Doubtless Bay etc).
Where you will stay:
We have a fully self-contained caravan on the corner of our property right next to your very own private beach. Kayaks will be available for you to use and a picnic table area.
There is a double bed in the caravan with bedding supplied. Couches and a table. There is also a toilet and a shower, towels provided. The kitchen has the basics; with plates, cups, cutlery, pots and pans. Also a small fridge and freezer.
You will have free Wifi at the caravan too 🙂
*The video below shows the caravan… but not where it will be parked when you come – the photos below it is where it is set up… in a place on the property we call ‘The Saddle’ *
Food and water:
You will need to bring your own food and cook your own meals.
Fresh drinking water is supplied (this is tank water and we do need to be careful to conserve it).
Laundry:
I am happy to wash and dry your clothes at my house for free – I have a washing machine and a dryer.
Who else lives on the property?
The land is owned equally between four sisters, Michelle (32), Bridget (31), Penny (22) and Holly (20).
Michelle, her husband, David (32) and their three daughters; Lilly (9), Kate (7) and Emily (5), live in one of the houses on the property. Bridget and her husband, Topher (37) and their tiny baby boy, Mackellar, live in the other home.
There are also two Shiba Inu dogs (Lulu and Gemma), and two ginger cats (Puffy and Pinky) who live in Michelle’s house (plus a steady flow of foster kittens that the little girls foster for the local rescue). The dogs stay at Michelle’s house most of the time.
What will you do?
In exchange for the accommodation you will spend 3 hours (each) per day doing mostly weeding and other similar out-door tasks. Nothing very complicated but it will be physical.
We are outside working on the property most days too – normally in the early morning and late evening when its less hot. Most often you will be working with just the two of you.
There will be no money exchanged (either way).
Requirements:
We are looking for an independent couple who are friendly, happy to work outdoors and who are non-smokers. People who enjoy peace and quiet and having their own space.
It’s really important to us that you keep the caravan and area clean and tidy. We love our caravan and our property and are trying really hard to make it nice.
You will definitely need a car so that you can enjoy the area and get your own food.
No kids or pets.
How long:
There is no maximum amount of time you must stay, we are happy to be flexible with what suits – if both you and we are happy then you’re welcome to stay a long time. We will be wanting help for the next two ish years. Three nights is the minimum amount of time we would like someone to stay – ideally at least a week.
If things are not working out you are welcome to leave with no notice (although of course we would appreciate some), and we reserve the right to ask you to leave with one nights notice if we are not happy as well (or for any other reason).
Who have you had so far?
We started this in December 2023 and so far have had a steady flow of amazing people come and stay here. People from the UK, France, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Canada, Belgium, Hong Kong and America. We have made lifelong friends with most of these couples and its SO hard to say goodbye when they move on!
Our mum has a place 5 min drive away and she can host up to 4 people at a time, so often the Wwoofers at her place and at our place all hang out and go on local adventures together.
We cannot promise that we will take you out on the boat and on adventures or have shared dinners together etc, however IF we are doing that while you are here we would LOVE to take you with us – as we have done with most of the Wwoofers who have stayed here 🙂 (It is just that we have to be free from work and the weather has to be right so we cannot promise this).
Here are some photos of our wonderful past Wwoofers with us, working on our property, hanging out with the Wwoofers from our mums place and going on adventures with us 🙂
When can I start?
We have availability NOW has our previous lovely wwoofers have just left.
